Landing at HSIA for the first time — or after a long gap — can feel disorienting. Here’s what actually happens, in order, so nothing catches you off guard.
1. Disembarkation and immigration After leaving the aircraft, you’ll follow signs to Immigration. International arrivals join queues based on passport type. Have your passport, and visa or arrival card if required, ready before you reach the counter — fumbling here is what causes most delays.
2. Baggage claim Once through immigration, screens show which belt corresponds to your flight. Bags can take anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes to appear, depending on how busy the airport is.
3. Customs Bangladesh uses a green/red channel system. If you have nothing to declare, the green channel is usually quick. Random checks do happen, so keep receipts for high-value items handy.
4. Exiting to the arrival hall This is where things often go wrong for families — the arrival hall can be crowded, and spotting a specific person among dozens of drivers and greeters is genuinely difficult. A pre-agreed meeting point, or a greeter holding a printed name placard, removes this problem entirely.
5. Getting to your next destination Whether that’s a private car, a rental, or a relative’s vehicle, having this arranged before you land — rather than negotiating with airport touts on arrival — saves both time and money.
